Rozhovor - The Sidewalk Doctors

Britské ska začalo, za posledních pár let znovu vystrkovat růžky. Kapely jako Hotknives, Buster Shuffle nebo King Hammond jsou dobře známé i mimo ostrovy ale Anglie je plná stejně dobrých kapel, které bohužel málokdy vytáhnou paty mimo Británii a jednou z nich jsou právě i londýnští Side Walk Doctors. O kapele byla zmínka už v květnu 2013 v sekci profil, kdy mě inspirovalo k napsání článku právě jejich vystoupení v rámci London International Ska Festivalu. Hudebně jde hlavně o rocksteady s příměsí early reggae a klas. ska s neuvěřitelně vytříbeným zvukem, který k rocksteady patří. Za kapelu odpovídal kytarysta a zakladatel kapely Lenny Bignell.



 
Zdar, takže na úvod, mohli byste trochu představit kapelu, jak dlouho už hrajete, něco o vaší diskogafii? Jsem si jistej, že lidi v Čechám Side Walk Doctors moc dobře znát nebudou.

Já a Nathan jsme založili tuhle kapelu v roce 2008. Hrál jsem už ve ska kapelách několik let a chtěl jsem dělat něco míň ska a víc rocksteady, což byla vždycky moje oblíbená éra jamajský muziky. Nahráli jsem nějaký dema, který objevil Sean Flowerdew z Pama International, který tou dobou rozjížděl vlastní label Rockers Revolt. Líbilo se mu to a chtěl nám vydat album. Začali jsem nahrávat s Marken Thompsonem (bicí) a Dannym Thopsonem (basa), se kterým jsem už předtím hrál v Dualers. Předtím, než bylo nový album hotový jsem se přidal k Pama International kde jsem nahradil Lynvala Goldinga, který měl v tý době spoustu práce s reunionem The Specials. Bylo to několik opravdu nabytých let pro Pama International, takže do roku 2010 jsme neudělali se Side Walk Doctors téměř nic. Až do chvíle, než jsme šli do studia s Andy McLeanem (basa) a Dredy Rockers2Rockers (bicí) oba dva z Pama Intl. no a to byla právě ta sestava, která dodělala album Music is Medicine. V té době ale Rockers Revolt skončilo a Sean rozjížděl nový label Phoenix City records. Takže album vyšlo digitálně a my jsme ho vydali na CD na naší vlastní značce Soul Elixir.

Na světě máte zatím album Music is Medicine z roku 2011, chystáte někdy v dohledný době novou desku?

Právě mixujeme naší novou desku. Je to "self titled" album (bez názvu) a mělo by vyjít v květnu. Je to trochu odklon od toho co bylo na Music is Medicine. Hlavní vliv má pořád 60's Jamaica ale taky jsem to rozšířili o vlivy jako Memphis soul, New Orleans r'n'b, King Tubby, Ray Charles a Howlin Wolf. Myslím, že je na poslech obtížnější a víc procítěné, než Music is Medicine a jsme z něj opravdu nadšený.

Personálně jste propojený s Pama International. Jsou znát ve vašem soundu nějaký vlivy právě z týhle kapely nebo jsou Side Walk Doctors totálně odlišnou kapelou?

Sdílíme spoustu společných vlivů a některé muzikanty ale nemyslím si, že tyhle kapely znějí nějak stejně. Pama International je hlavně Seanova kapela a on má největší podíl na psaní songů a produkci, takže je to jeho vize, která utváří kapelu. U Side Walk Doctors píše všechny songy Nathan a já, já ke všemu dělám ještě produkci. Takže i když se stejnou inspirací nakonec to vychází dost odlišně. Společně se Seanem pracujeme na veldejším projektu Phoenix City All-stars, koprodukovali jsem poslední dvě alba a když už nic, tak bych řekl, že je víc podobností mezi Phoenix City All-stars a Side Walk Doctors.

Další otázka bude o UK scéně. Jasně lidi většinou znaj legendy z éry 2tonu jako The Specials, Madness, The Selecter, Beat atd....ale když se podívám na současný britský ska, najde se tam spoustu novejch kapel jako Buster Shuffle (který jsou mimo Anglii asi nejvíc známý spolu s Hotknives a King Hammondem), Phoenix City All-stars, Dirty Revolution, Rasta4eyes, The Downsetters, The Delegators, Too Many Crooks, The Talks, Cartoon Violence, Bombskare atd....Je pravdou, že za posledních pár let zažívá britský ska oživení?

Tím si nejsem moc jistý, ska v Británii nikdy nezmizelo. Je tu vždycky v nějaký formě ale zdá se, že je tu nějak víc mladých kapel, než předtím.

A proč, když je v Anglii tolik kapel (s vyjímkou několika málo skupin) nejezdí na festivaly a koncerty taky mimo Anglii? Například kromě Buster Shuffle, Hotknives a Bad Manners jsem neviděl nějaký anglický kapely na tour po Evropě? To lidi v Británii nemaj rádi starej kontinent....? :D

Ha ha. Nemůžu mluvit za ostatní kapely ale my bysme si rádi zahrály v Evropě. Doufám, že tenhle rok to vyjde. Myslím, že jeden z problémů je, finančně to utáhnout. Já tu taky nevidím moc evropských kapel..... asi ze stejného důvodu.

Jste z Londýna, jaká je londýnská scéna? Nějakej čas jsem v Londýně pobejval a přišlo mi, že ska sice mladý lidi stále baví ale hodně z nich byli, stejně jako já cizinci, jinak mi přišlo, že na koncerty chodí klidně i věkový skupiny kolem 30 - 40 i více let.

Myslím, že máš naprostou pravdu. Jsou tu ve scéně maldší lidi ale většina je starší a spoustu mladších jsou cizinci. Fakt nevím, proč to tak je. Asi nejsem ta správná osoba na tuhle otázku, když jsem jeden z těch "třicátníků až čtyřicátníků". Informovanost o koncertech je ale na slušnější úrovni, než kdy byla.

Znáte se s Kevinen Flowerdewem, kterej stojí za Do the Dog rec. a stejnojmennym skazinem a kterej organizuje London International Ska Festival?

Neznám se s Kevinem z Do the Dog rec. Je neskutečné to množství alb co během roku vydá nebo distributuje....opravdový supporter ska scény. To jeho brácha Sean Floweder je ten kdo stojí za festivalem. Je to fakt skvělá akce. Minulý rok byl nejlepší a myslím, že letošní rok to bude ještě lepší. Opravdu se těšíme na hraní s Keith and Tex a Ken Parkrem a na vystoupení Derricka Morgana. 

Posloucháte taky kapely z ostatních evropskejch zemí nebo preferujete jenom UK ska? A znáte nějaký naše ska/reggae kapely z Čech nebo ze Slovenska?

Bohužel neznám žádný český nebo slovenský kapely. O kom bych měl vědět? Mám rád pár evropských kapel. Mám radši "oldschool" tradiční zvuk, mezi moje oblíbence patří Caroloregians/Moon Invaders a Los Granadians.

No co se týká našich kapel, tak se určitě koukni po Chancers, Green Smatroll, Larika, Discoballs, Basta Fidel, Polemic, Skafander, Sto Zvířat, Prague Ska Conspiracy (RIP) nebo Fast Food Orchestra atd.....

Ok tak to by bylo vše, dík za váš čas. Chceš ještě něco vzkázat nebo někoho pozdravovat nakonec?

Hi, for the beginning could you little bit introduce your band, how long have you been playing, something about your discography? I'm sure that people in Czech maybe don't know Side Walk Doctors so well.

Myself and Nathan formed the band in 2008. I had been playing in bands on the ska scene for a couple of years and wanted to do something less ska and more rocksteady which has always been my favourite era of Jamaican music. We recorded some demos which found there way to Sean Flowerdew from Pama Intl. who at the time was running his own label Rockers Revolt. He liked them and wanted to put out an album. We started recording with Mark Thomson on drums and Danny Thompson on bass, who I had played with in the Dualers. Before it was finished I ended up joining Pama International to replace Lynval Golding who was busy with the reformed Specials. It was a really busy couple of years for Pama so we didn't really do anything until 2010 when we went back into the studio with Andy McLean on Bass and Dredy Rockers2Rockers on Drums (both from Pama Intl.) and it was this line up that completed Music is Medicine. By this time Rockers Revolt had closed and Sean was running a new label, Phoenix City Records. So the album came out digitally with them and we pressed the cd on our own label Soul Elixir. Our only other release to date has been a cover of the Beatles All My Loving released on Hotshot and Scorcher records. 

You have published for now album Music is Medicine from year 2011, are you     preparing at some time in the future new album?

We are just mixing our new record. It's self titled and should be out in May. It's a bit of a departure from Music is Medicine. The primary influences are still 60's Jamaica but we've also expanded on them a bit. Adding influences like Memphis soul, New Orleans r'n'b, King Tubby, Ray Charles and Howlin Wolf. I think its a tougher more soulful record than Music is Medicine and we're really excited about it. 

You are personnelly connected with Pama International. Are there in your sound some influences from this band or Side Walk Doctors are totally different band?

We share a lot of the same influences and some of the same musicians but I don't think the bands sound very alike. Pama international is very much Sean's band, he does the majority of the song writing and the production so it is his vision that shapes the band. With the Sidewalk Doctors all the songs are written by Nathan and myself and I do the production so even with the same influences it comes out differently. Sean and myself also work together on the Phoenix City All-stars, We co-produced the last 2 albums so If anything I'd say they're are more similarities between the Phoenix city All-stars and the Sidewalk Doctors.

Another question will be about UK scene. Of course people usually knows legends from 2tone era like The Specials, Madness, The Selecter, Beat etc...but when I look on current british ska there is so much "new" bands like Buster Shuffle (which are maybe most famous out of England together with Hotknives and King Hammond), Phoenix City All-stars, Dirty Revolution, Rasta4eyes, The Downsetters, The Delegators, Too Many Crooks, The Talks, Cartoon Violence, Bombskare etc....is truth that in few years, british ska goes up again and have new power?

I'm not sure about that, Ska never really goes away in Britain it's always there in one form or another but there does seem to be more younger bands than before. 

And why, when there is so much bands (with exception of few groups) don't go on gigs and festivals out of England? For example besides Buster Shuffle, Hotknives a Bad Manners I didn't see some UK bands on tour around Europe? People in Britain doesn't like old continent or....? :D

Ha ha. I can't speak for the other bands but we'd love to play in Europe. Hopefully this year we will. I think one problem is that it's hard to make it financially viable. I don't see many European bands coming to play here either, probably for the same reason. 

You are band from London. What is london scene in these days? I was several months in London and my imprressions were, that young people still like ska but much of them were foreginers same like me. Otherwise I saw that on gigs going also people about age 30 - 40 and more.

I think you're exactly right. There are younger people on the scene but the majority are older and a lot of the younger ones are foreign. I don't really know why that is. I'm probably not the right person to ask being one of the 30- 40 year olds :) gig wise. I think it's as healthy as its ever been. 

Do you know each other with Kevin Flowerdew, who is stand behind Do the Dog rec. and skazine and who is oranizing London International Ska Festival?

I do know Kevin from Do the Dog, It's incredible the amount of albums he has released or distributed over the years a true supporter of the ska scene.  it's his brother Sean Flowerdew who runs the festival though. It's such a great event. Last year was the best yet and I think it'll be even better this year. We're really looking forward to playing with Keith and Tex and Ken Parker and seeing Derrick Morgan.

Do you like also some groups from another europian countries or prefer UK ska only? And do you know some Czech or Slovakian ska/reggae band?

I don't know any Czech or Slovakian bands, who should I look out for? I do like some european bands. I prefer more old school traditional sounds, My favorites are the Caroloregians/Moon Invaders and Los Granadians.

So with regard to our bands, check certainly The Chancers, Green Smatroll, Larika, Discoballs, Basta Fidel, Polemic, Skafander, Sto Zvířat, Prague Ska Conspiracy (RIP) or Fast Food Orchestra etc....
