Zdarte. Na začátek klasická, byť nezbytná úvodní otázka. Mohli byste trochu představit sebe a kapelu, odkud jste, jak dlouho už hrajete a tak?
Zdar já jsem Gustavo, známý taky jako Visón a jsem součástí kapely Crabs Corporation z Buenos Aires - Argentina a hraju na basu. S kapelou jsme začali v roce 2001 pod jménem La Sonora Brixton a o pár let jsme si změnili jméno a udělali nějaký hudební změny. Myslím, že to bylo v roce 2004 nebo 2005, kdy jsme začali jako Crabs Corporation.
Když porovnám váš sound s jinejma latinsko-americkejma early reggae kapelama, musím říct že je prostě jinej! Je tam nejenom 69 reggae ale taky soul, funky, Mod, zvukový efekty a vsuvky atd.....to všechno v kombinaci s reggae z vás dělá poměrně originální hudební těleso. Asi nemám právdu, když mluvím o Crabs Corporation, jenom jako o early reggae kapele?
To je zajímavý, protože stejně popisujem náš sound i my.....ano jsme early reggae kapela ale ne tak úplně. Náší hlavní a první inspirací je early reggae a rocksteady ale myslím si, že Crabs Corporation jsou mnohem víc, než early reggae band. Ovlivňuje nás mnohem víc muziky, taky subkultura Mods je pro nás inspirací. Vždycky jsme si mysleli, že Mod nemusí bejt nutně spjatý s minulostí, proto upřednostňujeme trochu originálnější sound a muziku dneška. 2tone kapely, dělali to samý, hráli pod vlivem 60. let ale s punkovým a new wave zvukem, 2tone je další naší hlavní inspirací. To je možná důvod proč využíváme samply a DJe na podiu, protože žijeme teď, samozdřejmě s vlivy z minulosti ale přecijenom teď.
Vím, že jste spolupracovali s takovýma jménama jako King Hammond, Dave Barker nebo Susan Cadogan. Je ještě někdo další takovýho jména s kym jste spolupracovali?
Ano, Jennie Matthias byla náš první speciální host na singlu s Dave Barkerem. Jennie je opravdu výborná umělkyně a na našem posledním 6 songovém EP se objevila znovu, taky na něm hostují Andy Keys Clark z Anglie a Pablo Krantz z Buenos Aires. Před dvěma lety jsme backovali i Roy Ellisovi a.k.a Mr. Symarip na dvou koncertech tady v Buenos Aires. V budoucnu zhrneme i nějakou spolupráci s lidmy z Jamajky a Anglie. Potom co jsme nedávno udělali koncert s King Hammondem v Buenos Aires, jsme se rozhodli udělat společně nějaký nový věci, brzy o nich uslyšíte! Ale nejenom lidi z reggae nebo ska scény s námi spolupracovali, naříklad DJ Andy Smith (Portishead) dělal remix našeho prvního singlu s Jennie Matthias & Dave Barkerem. Také jsme se objevili na reggae tribute albu The Clash Goes Jamaican, kam jsme nahráli naší verzi Ghetto Defendant s italským zpěvákem a umělcem Andreou Prodanem, bratrem nejznámější argentinské ikony Lucy Prodana, který byl zpěvákem kapely Sumo z 80. let. Minulý týden jsme udělali dva songy s novou zpěvačkou z Norska, s Anjou Klove. Jde o early reggae verzi songu Lovely Head od kapely Golfrapp. Bude to součástí našeho příštího materiálu. Taky jsme byli přizváni ke spolupráci na novym tribute albu Madness Specialized, kde jsme nahráli cover verzi týhle skvělý kapely, tak jsme fakt rádi za tuhle příležitost.
Povězte nám něco o scéně v Buenos Aires, kapely, kluby kde se scházíte apod...... Je tam něco takovýho co by se dalo onálepkovat jako "undergroundová scéna"?
Jasně, máme spoustu kapel v různejch žánrech. Úroveň argentinskejch kapel je vysoká a opravdu dobrá, je tu spousta lidí co následujou různý žánry ska, early reggae, soul, garage a další, taky se tu za posledních 10 let objevilo spoustu novejch Djs. Myslím si, že je tohle je super pro naší scénu. Nemluvím o nějaký konkretní scéně, mluvím prostě obecně o celym undergroundu.
Jak to vypadá s vaší diskogafií, máte už na kontě nějakou regulerní desku nebo něco plánujete vydat v blízký budoucnosti?
Jo jo, z nějakýho důvodu jsme ještě nenahráli naše první album, vždycky kolekcy našich nahrávek na EP ale stále ne naší první, regulerní desku. Zatím máme 3 singly vydaný v Evropě a 6ti singlový 10' palcový EP vydaný v USA. Ale právě teď na tom pracujeme, máme konečně čas na nový věci.
Za posledních pár se v Jižní Americe začali objevovat, nejenom ska nebo skapunkový kapely ale taky early reggae a rocksteady (jenom tak namátkou: Jamaica 69, Los Aggrotones, The Elephants, Crabs Corporation, Tempranos....) Kdy to vůbec u vás začalo tahle vlna early reggae a obecně jam. soundu 60. let?
Takhle, my vždycky říkáme, že v Jižní Americe La Sonora Brixton byli první kdo byli opravdu ovlivněný early reggae. Další kapely v té době byli ze Španělska, určitě znáš Los Granadians, ještě si pomatuju The Aggronauts, taky Jamaica 69 ale to byli tehdy jediný kapely v prvních letech (přibližně 2001 - 2008). A pokud mluvíme o 60'ska tak v Argentině první kapela, která zkoušela experimentovat s originálním ska soundem byl band s názvem Sir Coxone a později Satelite Kingston a Dancing Mood, nebylo to ale early reggae, byli spíš víc do 60's ska.

Argentina a Jižní Amerika jsou kulturně a historicky stále propojený se Španělskem. Jsou ve vaší scéně znát nějaký vlivy, třeba přes Liquidator records nebo španělský kapely jako jsou Los Granadians, Smooth Beans nebo třeba Ratazans (i když ty jsou z Portugalska)? A jak si u vás vedou španělský ska, rocksteady nebo early reggae kapely a vůbec bandy z Evropy?
Jak jsem říkal předtím, byli jsme v kontaktu od 90. let s lidmi ze Španělska, jako je Toni Face, majitel Liquidator records. Když jsem začínali, ještě pod názvem La Sonora Brixton tak nás přijel navštívit do Buenos Aires a o rok později taky Teddy Garcia klávesák z Los Granadians se kterým jsme ve studiu nahráli pár songů. Tony později přijel taky, kvůli našemu koncertu s Mr. Symaripem, je totiž jeho manažer. A když už mluvíš o Smooth Beans tak bys měl vědět, že jejich zpěvák byl součástí La Sonora Brixton a Crabs Corporation, je z Buenos Aires ale před pár lety se přestěhoval do Španělska. Stále se ale účastní nahrávání s Crabs Corporation, když je zrovna v Buenos Aires. Občas s námi taky hraje na našich živých vystoupench, prostě brotherhood, chápeš!
Taky se nesmím zapomenout zeptat na váš národní sport. Fandíte nějakýmu místnímu fotbalovýmu klubu?
Jasně hlavní část kapely jsou ze San Martin, sousedství s našim lokálním klubem Chacarita Juniors ale musím říct, že se o sport nějak víc nezajímáme. Nejsme fanoušci, máme radši umění, kino a muziku, než sport, nicméně Chacarita Juniors je náš tým.
Ok tak myslím, že to by bylo asi všechno, dík za váš čas a jestli chcete něco vzkázat nakonec nebo někoho pozdravovat máte možnost.

Hi! I'm greeting Crabs Corporation. For the beginning I'll start with classic question. Could you little bit introduce your band and yourself, where are you from, how long have you been playing etc.?
Hi, I'm Gustavo also known as Visón, and I’m part of the band “The Crabs Corporation” playing bass, we are from Buenos Aires, Argentina and we started in 2001 playing under the name of “La Sonora Brixton” and some years later we changed the name to The Crabs Corporation with some musical changes to the group, I think The Crabs Corporation started on 2004 or 2005.
When I compare your sound with another south-american early reggae bands, you are just different! Not only 69 reggae but also soul, funky, Mod stuff, sound effects etc..... this all in combination with reggae sound, makes you very original. Am'I right when I'm talking about Crabs Corporation just like about early reggae band? :-D
It's interesting because when we’re trying to explain our sound to the people, we think the same… we are, but not. Our very first influence and our principal is the early reggae sound and rocksteady but I think The Crabs Corporation is much more than an early reggae band, we have another influences too, lot. Also the Mod culture is still an important influence for us, so we used to think that some Mod don't have to be something about the past, we prefer to try to do keeping the original sound but a music from today, the 2tone bands did the same playing under the 60s influences but with the punk and new wave sound, 2tone is another of our principal influences too. So maybe that’s the reason we includes samples and a DJ on stage, because we are living this time, with several influences from the past of course, but now.
I Know that you worked with big names of ska and reggae scene such as King Hammond, Dave Barker or Susan Cadogan. Is there someone else with whom you collaborated?
Yes, Jennie Matthias was our first special guest on the song with Dave Barker too, she’s a really great artist and we did a new song on our last vinyl EP, also Andy Keys Clark from England and Pablo Krantz from Buenos Aires was part of that 6 songs EP. We was the backing band of Roy Ellis on the 2 concerts he did on Buenos Aires two years ago, we will includes new participations of people of Jamaica and England, after we did recently a concert with King Hammond on Buenos Aires the last month, we decides to do a new stuff together, very soon you’ll know about this. Not only people from the reggae or ska scene use to do collaborations with us, DJ Andy Smith (Portishead) did a remix of our first single with Jennie Matthias & Dave Barker, also we take part on the “Clash Goes Jamaican” reggae tribute album to The Clash doing our version of “Ghetto Defendant” featuring Andrea Prodan, an italian singer and actor, he’s the brother of one our most argentinian rock icons; Luca Prodan who was the singer of the Band “Sumo” from from the 80’s, if you don’t know about Sumo you must see some on youtube, they was great.On this last week we did two songs with a new female singer from Norway, her name is Anja Klove and together we did an early reggae version of the song “Lovely Head” a Golfrapp’s cover rocksteady version and it will be part of some of our next releases. Also we was invited to participate on the new tribute to Madness Specialized doing a cover version of this great band, so we’re so happy with this opportunity.
Tell us something about scene in Buenos Aires, bands, clubs where you meet each other etc...... Is there something what is possible call "underground scene"?
Yes, we have some great bands in various genres, the level of the Argentinian bands are high, really good and there’s a lot of people who follow differents bands, ska bands, early reggae bands, soul bands, garage bands and others, also lot of new deejays started in these last 10 year I see, so I think is a cool moment for our underground scene, I’m not talking about an specific scene you know, just about all the underground scene, in a general way.
How it looks with your discography, have you already released any full-length album or are you planning to publish something in near future?
Yes, for some reason we still didn't our first album, always collecting recording sessions but still not the first album, just 3 singles releases on Europe and an 10’ 6 songs EP on USA, now we’re working on that, we have our times to do the things.
In last few years we can see in South America, not only ska or skapunk but also early reggae and rocksteady bands (just for example: Jamaica 69, Los Aggrotones, The Elephants, Crabs Corporation, Tempranos....) When started in latin america this wave of early reggae and generaly 60's jamaican sound?
Well, we always says that in South America “La Sonora Brixton” was the first to have a serious early reggae influence, another bands in that moment was from Spain, you know Los Granadians and I remember The Aggronauts too, also in Mexico Jamaica 69. I think there’s no more bands in that’s first years (2001 to 2008 aprox) and if we talk about the 60’s ska influence we must say in Argentina the first band who tries with the original ska sound was a band called “Sir Coxsone” and later Satelite Kingston and Dancing Mood, not into early reggae but into 60’s ska.
Argentina and South America are culturally and historically connected with Spain. Is there some influence in your scene, for example over Liquidator records or spanish bands like Los Granadians, Smooth Beans or The Ratazans (even if, they're from Portugal)? Are popular within your scene ska, rocksteady or early reggae bands from Spain and Europe?
As I told you before we was in contact since the 90’s with people from Spain like Toni Face, the owner of Liquidator Records, when we started under the name La Sonora Brixton we received the vistis of Toni to Buenos Aires and one year also Teddy Garcia, the keyboard of Los Granadians also came and we did some song together on studio too. Later Toni came again to Buenos Aires for the concert of Roy Ellis & The Crabs Corporation, he’s the Roy’s manager. And if you're talking about Smooth Beans, you should know his singer was part of La Sonora Brixton and The Crabs Corporation, he’s from Buenos Aires, an Argentinian who lives in Spain since some years ago, he still take part on the record sessions of The Crabs and when he is in Buenos Aires is part of the band on the live sets too, brotherhood you know.
I musn't to forget ask to you about your national sport. So are you fans of some football club in your city?
Well, the major part of the Crabs are from San Martin, a neighborhood with our local football club called Chacarita Juniors but I have to say that definitely sports is not our business, we’re not so fans about sports, we prefer art, cinema and music than sports, anyway Chacarita Juniors is our team.
