Rozhovor - The Slackers

The Slackers asi ne třeba představovat, jedna z nejznámějších amerických kapel a přední tahoun newyorkské ska scény, kde hrají a nebo dříve hrály snad všechny zásadní postavičky NYC scény, jako Vic Ruggiero, Dave Hillyard, Victor Rice nebo King Django. Za sebou mají víc jak 15 alb a nespočet singlů, zatím jejich poslením počinem je EP My Bed Is a Boat z roku 2013 a singl Rare Breed Subscription, který vyšel letos. Co nového u Slackers a jak vypadá uderground v dnešním New Yorku se dozvíte v následujícím rozhovoru. Za kapelu odpovídal David Hillyard (saxofon).



 

Zdarte The Slackers, takže na začátek můžete nám prozradit, jak dlouho už hrajete, protože mám dojem, že jste na scéně už od tý doby co jsem začal poslouchat ska?

The Slackers se dali dohromady v roce 1991. Chystáme se oslavit naše 25. výročí.

Pracujete teď na nějakym novym materiálu? Zaregistroval jsem váš novej singl Rare Breed Subscription, že by to byla předzvěst nový desky?

No jasně, právě jsme nahrály náš novej 7" singl na labelu Rare Breed Records. Měli jsme možnost zahrát cover jedný starý rocksteady klasiky "I Can't Hide". Ale hlavní je, že právě makáme na novym albu. Bude se jmenovat jednoduše The Slackers a bude na něm něco kolem 12 novejch songů. Pracovali jsme s několika různýma producentama, jako Brian Dixon z Aggrolites a nebo Victor 'Ticklah' Axelrod. Bude to venku v roce 2016, v Evropě by to mělo vyjít v Itálii na zančce Brain Lab Groove Records.

Slyšel jsem o vašem posledním bočním projektu Bad Cards, dokonce jste letos pod tímto názvem vydali desku. Můžete nám prozradit něco víc, o co vlastně jde?

Bad Cards jsou Ara, Jay a Vic. Já hraju jen v jednom songu. Jsou to rockový verze našich tracků a pár coverů.

Bad Cards ale není váš jedinej projekt, členy The Slackers můžeme vidět v mnoha dalších kapelách a solo projektech, jako příklad bych mohl uvést Crazy Baldhead nebo Rocksteady 7. Můžete nám říct, v kterejch dalších NYC kapelách můžeme potkat členy The Slackers?

Měl jsem od roku 1999 kapelu Rocksteady 7, vydali jsme celkově 5 desek. Pod svým vlastním jménem jsem vydal album California! a taky hraju v triu a quintetu, který hraje jazz. Vic taky hraje solo a vydal na půl tuctu desek. S Jesse Wagnerem (Aggrolites) a Nico Leonardem mají trio s názvem Reggae Workers of the World. Jay je zase lídrem Crazy Baldhead, což je spíš studiovej projekt ale taky hrajou koncerty, jako backing pro reggae klasiky jako Ken Boothe, Gaylads, Derrick Morgan, Keith & Tex nebo Ken Parker.

Myslím, že určitě nebudu první kdo se na to ptá ale přesto se musím zeptat. Proč váš basák drží tu basovku, stejným způsobem jako kontrabas?

Marcus si před lety zranil zápěstí a tak to vymyslel jako způsob, jak hrát i po tom zranění.

Jak vypadá dnešní NYC ska scéna, je pořád silná tak, jako tomu bylo v 90. letech nebo jsou tyhle dny už dávno pryč? Je v NYC nějaká nová krev, nový kapely, který byste mohli doporučit? Dokonce jsem slyšel, že i CBGB's zavřeli, jak to, že tak legendární punkovej klub musel skončit?

CBGB's je zavřený už 6 nebo 7 let! Možná i víc. Hráli jsme tam pár posledních koncertů, před zavřením, byla to sice malá akce ale za to se super nábojem a hrálo tam spoustu známejch kapel. Ve městě je draho, všechno je to o penězích, hodně klubů se přestěhovalo z Manhattanu do Brooklynu. Výkonný složky v New Yorku se moc nestaraj o historii nebo kulturu, jen o prachy. Ska scéna je tu malá, jsou tu kapely jako Frighteners, který vydávaj celkem dobrý věci ve stylu Heptones i mladší kapely jako Pandemics nebo Los Ladrones. Další týpci jako Sammy Kay teď hrajou spíš rock, než ska. Takže scéna je teď malá. Ale se Slackers taháme lidi z různejch směrů, což se nám docela daří.

Hrajete celkem tradiční styl ale USA je kromě toho plný skapunku a skacoru. Nejsem zrovna velkej fanda těhle kombinací, většinou mi příjde, že u podobnejch kapel chybí nějaký propojení s kořenama nebo s kulturou kolem jam. muziky. Jak vynímáte vy, jako "tradicionalisti" všechen ten U.S. skapunk a skacore?

Já bych neřekl, že je naše muzika přímo tradiční. Když jsme začínaly byli jsme hodně ovlivněný Skatalites, Maytals a Upsetters. Řekl bych spíš, že když posloucháš Slacker, tak můžeš slyšet vlivy oldschool ska ale taky je tam spoustu jinejch vlivů rock, latino, blues a jazz, takže nakonec naše muzika zní trochu jinak, než ska z 60. let. Můžeš sice slyšet oldschool vlivy ale my jsem na to šli svojí vlastní cestou. Nejsem zrovna velkym fanouškem třetí vlny a neposlouchám ani pop-punk a už vůbec ne metal, takže mě to nějak obchází.

Vzpomínám si na vaše EP International War Criminal z roku 2004, myslím, že téma tohohle EP je pořád aktuální (možná ještě víc). Díky za kritiku zasraný americký zahraniční politiky, především, když zazní z úst samotnejch Američanů. Otázka ale je kolik Američanů si vůbec uvědomuje, že ta tzv. "válka proti terorismu", je jenom válkou za ropu a geopolitickou hrou? Nebo to si fakt lidi mysleli, že Obama může něco změnit?

Myslím, že Obama změnil slušný množství věcí. Americká ekonomika je na tom docela dobře, v porovnání s Evropou, Kanadou, Čínou a Japonskem. Teď je na vzestupu. Hlavním problémem je velkej rozdíl v bohatství. Další věc je, že USA není tak agresivní v zahraniční politice, jako za Bushe ale pořád dělá spoustu hovadin. Za Bushe bylo lehký bejt proti, protože si věděl, že jeho instinkty jsou prostě šílený. U Obamy víš, že chce dát věci do pořádku, jenom hraje záludný, politický hry aby to prosadil a to obvykle zahrnuje účast v nějaký zasraný věci. Z toho jsou některý lidi docela cynický ale myslim si, že ten kompromis je podceňován. Je to něco co bysme měli víc respektovat. Je jednoduchý nadávat, když jsi nedostal 100% toho, co jsi chtěl ale bylo to snad lepší za Bushe, kdy jsi dostal 0% toho co jsi chtěl?

No na Obamovu zahraniční politiku mám odlišnej názor ale ok. Jinak to by bylo asi vše, díky za rozhovor!

Hi I'm greeting The Slackers, for the beginning could you tell us how long have you been playing? Because I have impression that you are on scene since the time when I started listen to ska.

The Slackers formed in 1991. We are about to celebrate our 25th anniversary. 

Are you working on any new material? I just registered new singl Rare Breed Subscription, is it presage of new album?

Yeah, we just did a new 45" on Rare Breed Records. It features us playing a cover of the old rocksteady classic "I Can't Hide". But the main thing we have been working on is a new album. It's a self titled album called The Slackers and it's centered around 12 new songs. We worked with several different producers including Brian Dixon of the Aggrolites and Victor 'Ticklah' Axelrod. It will be out in 2016. The european release will be out of Italy on Brain Lab Groove Records.

I heard about your latest side project Bad Cards, you have released even a self-titled album this year. Can you say something more about this project?

It features Ara, Jay and Vic. I play on one tune. It's rock versions of Slackers tunes and a bunch of covers.

Bad Cards is not only your one side project, members of The Slackers are playing in many side or solo projects, one example could be Crazy Baldhead or Rocksteady 7. Can you tell us in which another NYC bands are the members of The Slackers playing?

I have had the band, Rocksteady 7 since 1999 now? We have put out 5 albums. I also did one album under my own name called California! I also have a quintet and a trio that play jazz. Vic does solo gigs and has put out half a dozen solo albums. He has a trio with Jesse Wagner and Nico Leonard that is called Reggae Workers of the World. Jay is the leader of Crazy Baldhead which has mostly been a studio project but also plays gigs as a backing band for famous reggae singers like Ken Boothe, Gaylads, Derrick Morgan, Keith & Tex and Ken Parker.

I think that certainly I'm not first person who is asking about that but anyway I must to ask you. Why is your bassplayer holding a bass guitar in way like a contrabass?

Marcus hurt his wrist years ago so he developed it as a way to play around his injury.

How looks today's NYC ska scene, is still strong like it was in 90's or those days are definitively gone. Is there any new blood, new bands which could you to recommend? I've heard that even CBGB's is closed, how come that this legendary punk venue had to shut down?

CBGB's has been closed for over 6 or 7 years now! Maybe even more than that. We played at some of the last shows there. It was a small dump bit had good energy and a lot of famous bands played there. The city is a very expensive place. It's all about money. Most of the clubs have moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The powerful in New York are not very interested in history or culture. Just money. The ska scene in New York is small. There is a reggae band The Frighteners that is getting some nice press. They do a Heptones kind of thing. There are some younger bands like Pandemics and Los Ladrones. Some other guys like Sammy Kay have mostly been playing rock and not ska recently. So the scene is small right now. With the Slackers we draw people from a lot of different directions. We are lucky that way.
 
You are playing quite traditional jamaican music but USA is full of skapunk and skacore bands as well. I'm not much fun of these combinations, usually there's no connection with roots of jamaican music or culture. What is your opinion like a traditionalists about american skapunk or skacore?

I woudn't say our music is traditional exactly. When we started out we were very influenced by the Skatalites, Maytals and The Upsetters. I would say that when you listen to the Slackers you can hear the old ska influences but there have also always been rock, latin, jazz and blues influences. So our music ended up sounding different than old ska records from thr 60's. You can hear the old influence but we went our own way with it. I'm not a big fan of a lot of the 'third wave' ska bands but I don't listen to lots of pop-punk or metal either. So I'm just not into their influences.

I remeber your EP International War Criminal from year 2004. I think that topic of this EP is still (maybe more) actual and thanks for criticism of fucking US policy, especially from american citizens. But question is how many americans realize that so called "War against terorists" is just war for oil and geopolitical game or people really thought that Obama can change something?

I think Obama has changed a fair amount of things. The US economy is doing pretty well, especially compared to Europe, Canada, China and Japan. It's booming right now. The main problem is the big divide of wealth. And the US is not as aggressive on foreign policy under Obama as with Bush but it's still out there doing some bad stuff. With Bush it was easy to be against things. Cause you knew his instincts were bad. With Obama you know he wants the right things, he is just trying to play the tricky political games to get there. And that usually involves participating in fucked up stuff. That makes some people cynical but I think that compromise is underrated and very important. It's something that we have to respect more. It's easy to bitch when you dont get 100% of what you want but was it better under Bush when you got 0% of what you wanted?
 
I have different opinion on Obamas foreign policy but anyway, that's all thanks for interview!
