Zdravím 65 Mines Street, jako každý rozhovor začnu klasickou otázkou. Jelikož si nejsem jistý kolik lidí v Čechách vás zná, mohli byste trochu představit vaší kapelu? Jak dlouho už hrajete, z jaký části Francie pocházíte? Jste všichni v kapele profesionální muzikanti nebo je to jen hobby?
Zdar! Jsme 65 Mines Street, hrajeme ska a reggae od roku 2009. Pět členů kapely jsou zainteresovaný ve ska, reggae, punku, funky a surf music už spoustu let, pro některý z nás to jsou desetiletí! Kapela pochází z východu Francie, blízko Švýcarska a Německa. Nejsme přímo profesionální muzikanti, i když rádi bysme byli ale to není lehký!
Minulý rok v dubnu jste vydali vaší druhou desku Fix the Clock. Jste s ní spokojený? V čem je jiná, je tam nějaký rozdíl v porovnání s vaším prvním albem z roku 2010?
Ano je to úplně jiná deska. Původní line-up se trochu změnil, koncem roku 2012 odešel náš původní zpěvák. Museli jsme se zorganizovat s cílem vydat nový album v novym složení. Když jsme začínali bylo nás šest, teď je nás pět a vypadá to, že nám to takhle vyhovuje (víc místa v dodávce, když jsme na tour!). Upřímně, bylo to období plný pochybností. Druhá deska je jiná, než první album...chtěli jsme podvědomně naznačit změnu.
Vím, že občas vystupujete pod jménem 65 Mines Street & Magic Three. Řekněte nám o co jde? Je to nějaký váš vedlejší projekt?
Není to přímo vedlejší projekt. Je to stejná kapela akorát s dechovou sekcí. Tohle složení nám celkem dobře sedí, když vystupujeme jako backing band. Už jsme odehráli několik koncertů s Roy Ellisem (Mr. Symarip) a pro tohle léto pracujeme na další společný show. Jsme jednou z francouzkých backujících kapel, který vystupují s Mr. Ellisem a fakt nás to baví! Ten chlap je prostě gentleman!
Je pravda, že jste backovali legendárnímu Mr. Symaripovi už čtyřikrát? Jak se vám to povedlo, protože pro některý kapely je to jenom přání, některý s ním hráli jenom jednou a berou to za velkou satisfakci!?
Jo jo, celý to začalo s otevřením novýho klubu v našem městě. 65 Mines Street dostali volnou ruku zorganizovat tuhle show. Oslovili jsme Mr. Symaripa, jeslti by nepřijel zahrát pět nebo šest songů pro tuhle noc. No a on souhlasil! (taky přijeli bratři Hardissonové - Moon Invaders / Caroloregians - si s námi záhrát pár jejich tonů). Mr. Symarip odtud bydlí jenom tři hodiny vlakem, to tomu taky hodně pomohlo! Po týhle noci jsme zůstali v kontaktu a začali hledat koncerty ve Francii. Roy byl velmi potěšen, protože neměl moc příležitostí si u nás zahrát. Povídal, že sní o tom, že by si zahrál v Paříži, kde byl naposled na začátku 70. let. Rádi mu tohle přání splníme.
Taky jste vystupovali společně s Angelic Upstars a Crashed Out, což je klasický britský oi! Cítíte nějakou spřízněnost mezi oi! a ska scénou? Jsou tyhle dvě scény ve Francii nějak propojený?
To bylo ve Strasbourgu, jasně. Já sice oi! přímo neposlouchám ale užívám si, když můžu vidět tyhle týpky hlasitě hrát, jejich muziku! Angelic Upstars je působivá kapela a kromě žánru je to i energie co dává muzice smysl, alespoň co se týká mě! Pokud mluvíme o propojení mezi oi! a ska scénou, to je těžký říct. Některý festivaly zvou kapely z obou scén ale většinou se to děje na squatech. Tady ve Francii je pořád silný přesvědčení proti skinheadům, jsou považovaný za nebezpečný lidi, rasisty a tak... Takže to se týká oi! A masmédia to ještě ovlivňují. Nevadí, my budem hrát pořád, oi! se bude hrát pořád... Angelic Upstars nebo kapely jako Sham 69 tu stále jsou a to je to, co se počítá!
Máte hodně originální a dost specifickej sound, kombinace 2tonu, dirty-reggae a punku je něco co jsem nikdy předtím neslyšel, možná ještě Bobby Sixkiller májí podobný přístup jako vy. Jak jste přišli k týhle kombinaci? Hrálo tam roli i to, že jsou 65 Mines Street složený ze členů tří kapel, z nichž jedna byla punková? A jaká muzika vás ovlivňuje nejvíc?
Když jsme začínali zkoušet byly tu dva hlavní vlivy: early reggae a ska + punkrock / garage / surf. To zrodilo první album na který jsme celkem hrdý. Další deska na který teď pracujeme se bude vracem k prvotním vlivům s možná trochu větší "nasraností".
O čem jsou vaše songy, je v nich taky nějaký sociální a politický komentář, nebo jste spíš apolitičtější kapelou?
Doteď jsme se drželi od tématu politiky dál. Nechci mluvit o válkách a tak, protože je to problematický téma. Nesnáze jsou rozšiřovaný několika lidma, který ovládaj svět. Tohle je opravdový nebezpečí. "Rozděluj a panuj" z toho je mi prostě zle. Rasismus a války jsou strategie. Kdyby jsme mluvili o politicích, to by bylo téma na který bych se rád zaměřil. Netvrdím, že bojovat proti rasismu je jediný důvod. Bojuje se proti němu a mělo by se proti němu bojovat ale pro mě jsou cílem elity.
Mluvit o vážných tématech (hlavně u "politických" kapel) v cizym jazyce není zrovna lehká věc. To by mohlo vysvětlovat, proč tu kapely zpívaj hlavně ve francoužštině. My zpíváme anglicky, protože hrajeme hodně v zahraničí a kulturně 2tone & ska zní líp v angličtině!
Znáte nějaký naše ska kapely? Hráli jste už někdy tady v Čechách nebo na Slovensku?
Jasně! Před dvěma rokama jsme byli v Praze, Košicích, Bratislavě a na dalších dvou místech na tour s Fullproof Riddim. Skvělý, skvělý lidi a skvělý vzpomínky. Zůstali jsem v kontaktu s "Citronem", který nám naplánoval koncert v Coloseu v Košicích. Radi bysme se vrátili až vydáme naše třetí album. To bude během roku. Budeme tě o tom informovat jestli chceš.

Hi I'm greeting 65 Mines Street, like each interview I begin with classic question. I'm not sure whether people in Czech will know your band so well. So could you introduce your band? How long have you been playing, from which part of France are you from? Are all of you profesional musicians or it's just hobby?
Hi! We are 65 Mines Street and we play ska and reggae music since 2009. The 5 members of the band are all involved in ska, reggae, punk, funky and surf music and more, for many years now, decades for some of us! The band is based in the east of France, very close to Switzerland and Germany. We are not exactly 'professional' musicians, we all would like to be but this is not easy!
Last year in April you have published your second album Fix the Clock. Are you satisfied with new stuff? What's there different, is there any difference in compare with your first self-titled album from year 2010?
Yes it's a definitely different album. The original line up evolved a little bit, as our historical lead singer had to left the band in the late 2012. We had to organize ourselves to keep going on with the only goal to release a new album, with a “redesigned” team. We were 6 musicians when we started, now we're 5 and it all looks good for us (more space in the van when we are on tour!). Being serious it's been a period full of doubts and the second album is different from the first one, as we unconsciously wanted to mark the change.
I know that sometimes you perform under the name 65 Mines Street & Magic Three. Tell us what's going on? Is it any side project?
It's not exactly a side project. This is the same band plus a horn section. This line up fits well when a backing band is needed. We already played a couple of gigs with Roy Ellis (A.K.A. Mr. Simaryp) and we are working on a new show for this summer with the Boss. We are kind of the french backing bands for Mr. Ellis and we like it! This man is a gentleman!
Is truth that you have played with legendary Mr. Symarip already four times? How did you prove it because for some bands it's just a wish or another bands have played with him just once and it's big satisfaction for them!?
Yes, well it all began with the inauguration of a new venue in our town. 65 Mines Street has been given a free card to organize the show. We asked Roy Ellis if he could come to play 5 or 6 songs this night. He accepted! (Hardisson brothers - Moon Invaders / Caroloregians - also came up to play with us some of their tunes). He's living at only 3 hours from here by the train. It helps! After that night, we kept in touch and started to find gigs in France. Roy was really excited because he hasn't much oportunities to play in our country. He told us he dreams of playing in Paris as he never returned there since the early 70's! We'd really like to fulfill this wish!
You have performed also with Angelic Upstars and Crashed Out which is classical british oi! Do you feel any kinship between oi! and ska scene? Are these two scene connected in France?
That was in Strasbourg yes. Well, I'm not a regular oi! listener but I enjoy watching these guys playing loudly there music. Angelic Upstars is an impressive band and beyond the genre it's the energy that makes sense in music, at least for me! Then talking about links between oi! and ska scene, it's hard to say. Some festivals invite both scenes but most of the time it happens in squats. There is still a strong opinion against 'skinheads' here in France, as they are considered as dangerous people, racists and so on... So it is for oi! music. And the mass media influence this. Nevermind, we keep playing, oi! guys keep playing... Angelic Upstars or bands like Sham 69 are still present, that's what counts!
You have very specific and original sound, your combination of 2tone, dirty-reggae and punk is something I didn't hear before and maybe just Bobby Sixkiller has similar approach like you. How was created this combination? Played there the role that 65 Mines Street contains members from three groups, where one was punk band. And what kinds of music does influence you the most?
When we started to rehearse there were 2 main influences: early reggae and ska + punkrock / garage / surf. It gave birth to the first album and we are really proud of it. The next album we working on right now will go back to the first influences, with maybe more anger in it.
What about are your songs, is there also any social and political comment or you're more apolitical band?
So far we tried to stay away from political issues. I don't want to talk about war and so on because it's a problematical theme. The adversity is disseminated by a couple of guys that rule the world. This is the real danger. “Divide and rule”, this makes me sick. Racism and wars are a strategy. If we had to talk about politics that would be the theme I'd like to focus on. I'm not saying fighting racism is not a just cause. It is and it has to be fought. But for me the elites are the target.
I really like your scene but most of french bands singing in frech language. You, Bobby Sixkiller and The Branlarians are just one french bands which I know who is singing in english, why? And why the rest of bands prefer own language instead off english?
Talking about serious things ("political" bands in particular) in another language is not easy thing. That could explain why bands here sing in french. We do it in english because we play a lot in abroad and culturally 2tone & ska music sound better in English!
Do you know any our ska bands? Have you ever played here in Czech or Slovakia?
Yeah we've been to Prague, Košice, Bratislava and more places 2 years ago, touring with Fullproof Riddim. Good time, good guys and good memories too. We kept in touch with “Citron” who schedduled us at Coloseum in Košice. We'd like to come back when we release our third album. This will happen within a year. We will keep you updated about this if you want to.
