Rozhovor - The Talks

The Talks možná někteří z vás budou znát nejen ze stránek porkpie-ezinu ale i z jejich vystoupení na Mighty Sounds, kde se objevili v roce 2013. Tahle mladá, nicméně naprosto nadupaná parta z Yorkshiru si cestu k fanouškům teprve klestí ale myslím si, že už teď mají dost dobře našlápnuto. Za kapelu odpovídal Iain, který obstarává basu.











Zdar, tak pro začátek představte kapelu, jak dlouho už hrajete? Je to vaše první kapela nebo jste už hráli předtím v jiných kapelách?

Zdar, my jsme The Talks, kapelu tvoří Patrick (vokály/rytmická kytara), Jody (vokály/solová kytara), Iain (basa) a Tich (bicí). Kapela vznikla nahráním pár demo tracků Patem a Jodym, v Patově pokoji, někdy kolem léta 2009, hlavně spíš z experimentálních důvodů aby viděli jak to dopadne. Něco v tom viděli, tak Iain navrhl Tichovi, vytvořit rytmickou sekci, napsali další songy a začali jezdit hrát. Předtím, než jsme založili The Talks, tak jsme každý hrál v různých kapelách, různých žánrů, Patrick a Jody přišli z víc punkových a pár reggae kapel, Iain pro změnu z indie a soulu a Tich hraje v různých bluesových a metalových kapelách. Myslím, že je to i tím, že vzhledem k tomu, že máme tyhle vlivy, díky kterým máme takovou potřebu psát, tak jmse neustále inspirování navzájem sbírkou spousty songů, ke kterým máme přístup.

Minulý rok byl pro vás poměrně úspěšný, vydali jste dvě desky LP Hulligans a vaše druhé album Commoners, Peers, Drunks & Thieves, které vyšlo na konci listopadu. Proč tak dlouhý název a co vůbec znamená? Je nová deska v něčem jiná oproti předchozí produkci, jste spokojený s novým materiálem?

Jo minulý rok byl pro kapelu skvělý. Řekl bych, že doteď nejproduktivnější v její kariéře. Název alba jen shrnuje celkové téma a pocity. Textově jsme prozkoumali docela dost aktuální a politické otázky, ať už se jedná o výmysly a vtírání pravicového tisku, nebo nevyzpytatelné jednání místních poslanců, takže to vnímáme jako frázy, která zahrnuje všechen ten klam, který tu byl vytvořen. Ukazuje to taky jednu z jejich povah - to jak jsou všichni do jednoho stejní. Nová deska je určitě trochu jiná, než poslední. Live Now, Pay Later byla kolekcí songů, které jsme napsali během let od začátku kapely, takže když jsme poprvé přišli s nápadem udělat desku, měli jsme už velký výběr songů, z kterých jsme mohli vybrat ty nejlepší. S Commoners, Peers, Drunks and Thieves je to ve vlastně poprvé, kdy jsme si sedli a napsali album, plus mínus pár tracků, což nám dalo šanci sestavit, námět celé práce. S deskou jsme opravdu spokojený, vždycky jsme chtěli zkusit rozšířit hranice toho co děláme a experimentovat s variacemi stylu a mám pocit, že tady jsme k tomu měli příležitost.

Máte skvělý song Can Stand The Rain, kde hostuje i Nevile Staple z legendárních Specials. Jak jste se dostaly ke společné spolupráci?

Neville je náš dobrý kámoš se kterým se známe už spoustu let, taky je to člověk, který nás ovlivňuje už od začátku a tak se zdálo celkem jasný, že by mohl s námi udělat track. Navíc Can Stand The Rain sedne k jeho vokálu opravdu dobře.

Taky jste vystupovali v Čechách na festivalu Mighty Sounds. Jak se vám tu líbilo a jaké bylo publikum, jaká byla reakce, poznávali vás lidi? Nechtěli byste se ještě vrátit a udělat další gig? Ale taky jste hrály v Německu na This Is Ska festivalu, kde byla lepší atmosféra?

Mighty Sounds je fantastický festival, snad jeden z nejlepších na kterém jsme vůbec hráli. Jestli si dobře vzpomínám, byl parný horký den, když jsme hráli; Přiletěli jsme do Prahy noc předtím, což je trochu změna oproti obvyklým ranním letům. Řekli jsme si, že pojedem přímo do hotelu ještě brzy večer ale s jendou z našich oblíbených českých věcí, s pivem sešlo z plánu, našli jsme pár barů a začali jsme s Plzní a se Zlatopramenem. Netřeba dodávat, že jsme nebyli zrovna dobře odpočatí a trochu unavený v ten den ale byli jsme pořád nadšený zahrát. Hráli jsme kolem 18:00, atmosféra byla fakt ostrá a neuvěřitelná, skákal celý stan. Bylo debilní vedro, snad nikdy v životě jsem se nezpotil tak moc. A stejně je to i s This Is Ska. To je taky skvělý festival. Myslím, že nejde říct, že jeden je lepší, než ten druhý... oba jsou nesmírnou ukázkou energie a skvělých pocitů.

Řekl bych, že jste poměrně mladá kapela, jaký je váš věkový průměr? A co dělají členové The Talks v civilním životě, makáte nebo studujete?

V Anglii se říká, že je neslušné se ptát dívky na její věk, haha. Řekněme, že jsme všichni na smutném konci našich dvacetin. V civilním životě máme na práci spoustu různých věcí a prsty v různých věcech ale všechno se většinou motá kolem muziky. Někteří z nás jí učí, Patrick provozuje studio a produkuje pro různé umělce, někdo naopak organizuje koncerty a někdo hostuje v dalších kapelách. Ale jsme rádi, že je náš čas do značný míry spojen s muzikou.

Zúčastnili jste se taky kompilace pro Specialized Project, kde se objevili nejen anglické ska kapely. Na kompilačce Specialized II - Beat Teenage Cancer jsou i naši Chancers se songem (Czech) Toast. Jejich zpěvák a kytarista jsou Britové. Znáte je, nebo jiné české kapely?

No na Chancers jsme nikdy předtím nenarazili ale měli jsme tu čest hrát několik koncertů se Sto zvířat, skvělá kapela, super lidi a fakt umí hrát reggae...a mají výborný dechový linky. Hráli jsme v klubu Česká 1 v Kutné Hoře, který řídí jejich basák Wilco, který hrál s kapelou v Německu. Ví moc dobře jak se postarat o kapely, spousty Borovičky a piva. Zažili jsme v tom klubu dost šílenej večer co si tak matně vybavuji. Tyhle kluci fakt vědí, jak zapařit.

Jak to tak vypadá, tak za několik posledních pár let britské ska znovu ožilo, spoustu nových kapel, z nichž některé jsou "známé" i mimo Anglii (např. The Skints, Phoenix City All-stars, The Talks nebo Cartoon Violence)...Co myslíte, co je příčinou téhle "vlny"? 

Je tu poměrně slušná ska/reggae/punk scéna, která pomalu vzniká posledních pár let a do které dává spoustu lidí hodně tvrdé práce a usílí a je super vidět některé z těchto kapel jak si začínají získávat uznání, které si zaslouží. Nemluvě o tom, že spoustu těchto kapel píšou dobré songy a umí je perfektně zvládnout i na živo. Kdybych měl zmínit některé další skvělé britské kapely, které stojí za pozornost, byli by to Buster Shuffle, Counting Coins, The Stiff Joints, Tree House Fire a Imperial Leisure, ty stojí za poslech, jeden koncert nebo dva.

Minulý rok to bylo 35 let od začátků 2tonu a druhé vlny ska. Má 2tone pořád vliv na dnešní britskou ska scénu?

Jasně, a ve velkém. Neřekl bych, že kapely jako The Specials, Madness, The Beat, Selecter někdy doopravdy zmizeli. Nejde přece mít takový dopad a tolik změnit britskou pop music a kulturu, aniž by to do značné míry neovlivnilo vše, co přišlo potom. Opravdu pozitivní věc o nové vlně ska, která probíhá v současné době je to, že kapely rozvíjí žánr tím, že berou energii a přístup z více tradičních forem a kříží je s různými žánry. Máme některé opravdu zajímávé věci co vznikají skoro "během minuty".

A co skinhead reggae? Je celkem jasný, že 2tone má velký dopad na britské ska ale myslím, že se 69 reggae je to dost podobné, kapely jako Pioneers, Mr. Symarip, Dave & Ansell Collins nebo Hot Rod All-stars inspirovali spoustu dnešních dirty reggae kapel po Evropě a Americe. Posloucháte tenhle styl reggae? Jsou i v Anglii kapely tímhle ovlivněny?

Mám rád všechny druhy reggae, myslím, že je nemožné je nemít rád. V Anglii jsou kapely, které dělají tenhle styl ve víc tradičním 69 pojetí ale myslím, že nakonec přecijenom se zdá, že je to rozjetější v Evropě. Zdá se, že mnohem výraznější skinhead reggae scéna je např. v Německu, spíš než v Anglii.

Hi for the beginning, could you introduce the band, how long have you been already playing? Is it your first band or you were playing in another bands before?

Hi there, we are The Talks which is made up from Patrick on vocals/rhythm guitar, Jody on lead guitar/vocals, Iain on bass and Titch on drums. The band was created from a bunch demo tracks recorded by Pat and Jody in Pats tiny bedroom around summer 2009, mainly for experimental purposes and just to see how they turned out. They saw something in it and drafted in Iain and Titch to form the rhythm section, wrote more songs and started touring. Prior to forming The Talks we had all played in different bands of different genres, Patrick and Jody coming from more the punk end of things and a few reggae bands, Iain from the indie and soul area and Titch playing with various blues and metal bands. I think it is through having all of these influences that gives us that lust for writing and constantly being inspired by each others record collection and approach to songs.

Last year was for you quite successfull. You have released two albums, LP Hulligans and your second album Commoners, Peers, Drunks & Thieves which was released at the end of November. Why so long title and what it means? Is there on your latest album anything different compared to previous production, are you satisfied with new material?

Yeah last year was a great year for the band, the most productive in the bands career so far I'd say. The title of the album really just sums up the overall theme and feeling. Lyrically we've explored quite a few topical and political issues, whether it be the fabrications and intrusions of the right wing press or the dodgy goings on of local MP's, so this felt like a phrase that tied up the whole 'smoke and mirrors' deception that is forever created. It also shows the four sides of one of these character - how they're all one and the same. The new album is certainly quite different to the last. 'Live Now, Pay Later' was a collection of songs that had built up over time, since the start of the bands career really, so when we first came to the idea of making the album, we almost had a large selection of songs to pick the best from. With 'Commoners, Peers, Drunks and Thieves' it's the first time we've actually sat down and written an album, give or take a few songs, and really given ourselves the chance to compile a themed body of work. We're definitely very satisfied with this album, we always like to try to extend the limits of what we do and experiment with variations in style where we can, and I really feel like we've had the opportunity to do that here

You have a great song Can Stand The Rain, where guest also Nevile Staple from legendary The Specials. How did you get to colaboration with him?

Neville is a good friend that we've known for many years and also a man that has been influential to us since the start, and it just seemed obvious to have him perform on this track with us. The nature of 'Can Stand The Rain' just lent itself to his vocal style really well.

You have played in Czech on Mighty Sounds festival. How did you enjoy it and what audience? How was reaction, did the people recognize you? Would you like to return and make next gig? But you were also in Germany on This Is Ska festival, where was better atmosphere?

Mighty Sounds is an awesome festival, one of the best we've ever played. If I remember rightly it was a scorching hot day that we played; we'd flown into Prague the night before, which makes a change from the usual early morning flight, and said to ourselves that we were going straight to the hotel to get an early night, but with one of our favourite Czech things being the beer we strayed from the plan, found a few bars and got on the Pilsner Urquell and the Zlatopramen. Needless to say we weren't quite so well rested and slightly weary on the day, but still really stoked for the gig. We played around 6pm and the atmosphere was raucous and incredible, the entire tent was bouncing, it was stupidly hot, I don't think I've ever sweated so much in my life. And likewise, This Is Ska is also a great festival, I don't think you could say one was better than the other though, they're both equally immense displays of energy and good feeling in their own right.

I would say that you are quite young band, what is your average age? And what members of The Talks are doing in civil life, working or studying?

In the UK they say it's rude to ask a lady her age, haha. Let's just say that we're all roughly at the sad end of our 20's. We all have various other things on the go in our civil lives, and our fingers in a few different pies, but it's all centred around music. Some of us teach music, Patrick runs a studio and engineers/produces for all kinds of artists, some of us organise and promote gigs and some of us guest perform with other bands now and again, but we're lucky enough to have our time pretty much fully involved with music.You get involved compilations for Specialized Project where appeared not only UK ska bands. On compilation Specialized II - Beat Teenage Cancer are also our czech band The Chancers with song (Czech) Toast. Their singer and giutarist are from England. Do you know them or another czech bands?

I can't say that we've come across The Chancers before, but we have had the pleasure of playing a few shows with Sto zvířat; they're a great band, lovely people, and they can really play reggae...some really tasteful brass lines too; we played a show at Česká 1 in Kutná Hora which is run by their bass player 'Wilco' and then played a few shows in Germany with the band. He certainly knows how to accommodate bands, plenty of Borovička and beer, we had a pretty crazy night at his venue from the few bits of it that I can still remember, those guys really know how to party.

In the last few years seems that UK ska is rising again, lot of new bands some of which are "famous" also out of England (for ex. The Skints, Phoenix City All-stars, The Talks or Cartoon Violence)...What do you think what is reason of this? 

There's been a really healthy ska/reggae/punk scene developing and building slowly over the past few years, of which people have put a lot of hard work and effort into, and it's great to see some of these bands starting to get the recognition they deserve. I think its through a resistance to quit in the face of diversity, to stick to your guns and keep doing what you love. Not to mention that a lot of these bands just write really good songs and can always pull it off live too. If I was to mention some other great UK bands to check out they'd have to be Buster Shuffle, Counting Coins, The Stiff Joints, Tree House Fire and Imperial Leisure, well worth a listen and a gig or two.

Last year it was 35 years from rising of 2tone and second wave of ska. Do the 2tone still has influence on todays british ska scene?

Yeah, in a big way. Bands like The Specials, Madness, The Beat, The Selecter - I don't think they'll ever go away really, you can't make that much of an impact and make that much of a change to the British pop music and culture without it largely affecting all that comes after. The really positive thing about the new wave Ska scene that's happening at the moment is that bands are really evolving the genre, taking the energy and the approach of the more traditional forms and cross breeding it with all kinds of sounds, there are some really interesting things happening at the minute.

And what about skinhead reggae? It's clear that 2tone has big impact in british ska but I think same is it with 69 reggae and bands like Pioneers, Mr. Symarip, Dave & Ansell Collins or Hot Rod All-stars, which inspired lot of todays dirty reggae bands around Europe and America. Do you like this kind of reggae, are there in England any bands playing or at least inspired by this?

I like all kinds of Reggae, I think it's pretty impossible not to really. There are bands doing this kind of thing in the UK, in the more traditional 69 vein, but I think that end of things definitely seems to be much more thriving in Europe. There seems to be a much more prominent trad skinhead reggae scene going on in Germany for instance than in the UK.
