Rozhovor - The Tempranos

Opět tu máme další band z latinské Ameriky, tentokrát The Tempranos z Paraguaye, kteří brázdí vody skinhead reggae a rocksteady už víc jak pět let. Někomu se možná musí zdát můj zájem v kapelách z Jižní Ameriky evidentní, jelikož jde už o čtvrtou jihoamerickou kapelu, kterou jsem vyzpovídal, minule to byli Jamaica 69 z Mexika a červencový report měl taky co dočinění z latinskou Amerikou. Mimochodem o téhle kapele už byla zmínka v sekci profil. Jak se tedy daří early reggae v samotném srdci Jižní Ameriky se dočtete v následujícím rozhovoru.


 

Zdar, zdravim The Tempranos, začnu klasickou "nezbytnou" otázkou. Mohli byste představit kapelu, odkud jste a jak dlouho už hrajete?
 
Začali jsme vystupovat přibližně v roce 2009. Chtěli jsme hrát klasický reggae sound šedesátých let, Tempranos začínali s Diego Benitezem na kytaru, Paco Villalba na basu a Pablo Gonzales za klávesama a pianem, potom jsme potkali Waltra Rodriguze a základ byl na světě. Pak jsme potkali ještě další muzikanty a teď je nás v kapele celkem sedm. Hugo Falcon se k nám přidal na saxofon, Fernando Rios hraje hlavní kytaru a Nelson Sosa flétnu.

Slyšel jsem zatím jenom vaše první EP z roku 2009 ale mám pocit, že to není vaše jediná věc. Mohli byste prozradit co dalšího jste vydali, něco novýho?

Dali jsme volně ke stažení kopii našeho prvního alba z tohoto roku a v říjnu 2013 jsme vydali Horror Reggae EP s pěti melodiemi, který se vážou k hororům a známým, paraguayským duchařským povídkám na tohle téma.

Na vašem prvním EP je song na kterém jste spolupracovali s argentinskými Crabs Corporation. Jak jste se dostali ke spolupráci s Crabs Corporation, v čem spočívala tahle spolupráce, nahráli jste tenhle track dohromady jako jedna kapela?

Jasně, jsme s nima v kontaktu přes jednoho našeho kamaráda tady z Paraguaye, který je znal. Sdíleli jsme nějaký nápady na nový song a lidi z Crabs se mě zeptali a tehdejší zpěvák (Ruben) přidal klávesy a vokály. Poslali nám track a my akorát přidali pár částí, tady v Asuncionu. Riddim nahrály oni v Argentině.

Ok...jste z Paraguaye, znám pár early reggae kapel z Jižní Ameriky ale většina z nich jsou z Argentiny nebo Mexika. Je v Paraguayi nebo v Asuncionu vůbec nějaká scéna, je u vás boss sound tak "populární" jako třeba v Mexiku, Brazílii nebo Argentině?

Paraguay má hodně kapel a některý používají reggae riddimy ale přispůsobený víc latinu a popu. Tempranos je vlastně jediná kapela, která hraje jam. sound 60. let. Vycházíme od hamondek k 69 reggae stylu se saxofonem a flétnou ale máme i tracky s vokálama (většina vokálů jsou sice ve španělštině, i když teď jsme začali zpívat i v angličtině, vyhovuje nám obojí). Hrajeme taky rocksteady instrumentálky i s vokálama a taky pár verzí jamajských klasik a rarit, co máme rádi. Tempranos mají celkem dobrý ohlas od lidí tady v Asuncionu, hráli jsme na koncertech, který jsme si sami organizovali a roztancovali jsme spoustu lidí, který se přišli bavit. Nicméně tu není žádná skinhead, Mod nebo ska scéna. Lidi z celýho spektra se chodí na naše show bavit a poslechnout si muziku, nehrajeme jenom naše instrumentálky, pouštíme i vinyly z naší sbírky jako sound system.

Mám celkem rád jihoamerickou scénu, kapely jako Los Aggrotones, Jamaica 69, Crabs Corporation, The Elephants nebo Jurassic Sound System z Sao Paula ale otázka zní, odkud to přišlo, kdy se objevil tenhle zájem o starej jamajskej sound z 60. let, zrovna na kontinentu, jako je Jižní Amerika? Nebo to není tak velký jak se to zdá?

Myslím že reggae oldiesky se staly v Jižní Americe docela populární a hodně toho má co dočinění s internetem, sociálními sítěmi a blogem YouandMeonaJamboree z Brazílie. Neexistuje tak dlouho ale byla to iniciativa související s Jurassic Sound Systémem (týpek co začínal tenhle blog pak potkal Alexe Jurassica a začali pořádat sound system party v Sao Paulu). Všichni jsme díky němu poznali spoustu muziky, fakt díky za tenhle blog. Jenom pro představu o velikosti scény, během prvních měsíců, když jsme začali hrát, tak jsme jeli na show do Sao Paula společně s Jurrasic Sound Systémem a byla tam skoro tisícovka lidí, bylo to skvělý! Začalo to růst a dnes tu je "reggae brotherhood", mezi kapelama z Argentiny, Brazílie a taky Mexika. V Mexiku je taky spoustu dj's a akcí a pochází odtud jedna skvělá kapela jménem Travellers All Stars. Bavíme se i s lidma z Mexika a doufáme, že tam brzy budem moc udělat několik akcí. Dělali jsme akce i v Argentině společně s Los Aggrotones a oni u nás taky zahrály. I Jurrasic k nám přijeli a to celkem třikrát a taky náš kámoš Felix z Reggay 420 z Brazílie. Máme dobrý vztahy s reggae kapelama, fans a dj's, jak z této oblasti ale i ze zahraničí, stejně tak jako teď, když sdílíme myšlenky v tomhle interview s váma, přátelema z Čech.

Znáte nějaký český kapely? V roce 2012 byla na tour po Brazílii naše rocksteady kapelka Larika a před nima tam byli The Spankers a Fast Food Orchestra, což jsou spíš ska kapely. Slyšeli jste někdy o nich?

Moc ne, neznáme je ale rádi bysme ty kapely potkali a poslechli si je. Líbí se mi jméno Larika, myslím, že v portugalštině to znamená něco, jako když hulíš a dostaneš žravou. Big up Reggay 420!

Těhle pár otázek bude tak trochu o vinylu, protože za několik posledních pár let je zase zpátky a stále se drží. Takže... dáváte přednost radši CD jako formátu nebo vinylu, protože je autentičtější a ne tak sterilní? A co máte na vinylech rádi, v čem je lepší vydávat na vinylu, než na CD? Máte všechny vaše věci jenom na vinylu?

Vinyl je nejlepší formát. Doufáme, že na něm tenhle rok vydáme náš první singl, děláme na tom. Doteď jsme vydali naší první desku jenom v digitální podobě, ke stažení na webu a Horror Reggae EP v limitovaný CD edici ale rádi bysme měli všechno na vinylu.

Hi I'm greeting Tempranos. I will start by classic question. Could you introduce the band, where are you from and how long have you been already playing?

We started playing in 2009 aproximately. We wanted to play the classic reggae sound of the sixties. Tempranos began with Diego Benitez on guitar, Paco Villalba on bass and Paulo Gonzalez on the organ and piano. Later we met Walter Rodriguez and we had the basic. Later we met other musicians and friends and now Tempranos consist of 7 members. Hugo Falcon joined to play the sax, Fernando Rios to play the lead guitar and Nelson Sosa to play the flute.

I have heard just your first EP from the year 2009 but I have feeling that it's not your only release. Could you tell us what next did you publish, something new?

We released a digital free copy of our first album this year 2014 and in October 2013 we launched an Horror Reggae EP with five reggae tunes related to horror movies and Paraguay´s popular ghosts and stories about that theme.

On your first EP is a song that you worked with argentinian Crabs Corporation. How did you get to the colaboration with the Crabs Corporation and did you record this track together like one band?

Yes, we got in touch with them through a friend we have here in Paraguay that knew them. We shared some thoughts about the tune and the guys from Crabs asked me and the singer at that time (Ruben) to add organ and voices. They sent us the track and we added the parts here in Asuncion. They recorded the riddim in Argentina.

Ok you are from Paraguay I know some early reggae bands form South America but most of them are from Argentina or Mexico. Is there in the Paraguay or in Asuncion some scene? Is there the boss sound so "popular" like in Mexico, Brasil or in Argentina?

Paraguay has a lot of bands playing and some use reggae riddims but adapted to a more latin and pop sound. Tempranos is actually the only band that plays the sound of the sixties Jamaican music. We go from boss Hammond instrumentals to reggae 69 inna sax and flute style, but also tunes with vocals (most of the vocals are in Spanish now though we started singing in English, we like both). We also play rocksteady instrumentals and with vocals and do versions of Jamaican classic tunes and also rare tunes that we like. Tempranos got a great response from the people in our city Asuncion, and we are used to playing gigs that we organize ourselves and we get a lot of people dancing and having a fun. Anyway there is no skinhead or Mod or ska scene here. People from all backgrounds come to our shows to have a fun and listen to music. We not only play our instruments in our shows, we also play our vinyl record collections like in sound systems.

I realy like southamerican early reggae scene, bands like Los Aggrotones, Jamaica 69, Crabs Corporation, The Elephants or Jurassic Sound System from Sao Paulo but question is, where it came from, when did it appear this interest about old jamaican sound from 60's just in Latin America? Or it's not to big like it seems?

I think reggae oldies got very big in South America and a lot has to do with the internet, social media and a blog called YouandMeonaJamboree from Brazil. It no longer exists but this was an initiative related to Jurassic Sound System (the guy who started the blog then met Alex Jurassico and they started new sound system parties in Sao Paulo). We all got to know a lot of music (I mean members of bands like Tempranos, Aggrotones and other bands in latin america) thanks to this blog. Just to let you know how big it is, on our first months of playing as a band we went to do a show in Sao Paulo with Jurassic Sound System. There were close to a thousand people at the party. It was great! It all started growing and now there is "reggae brotherhood" between bands from Argentina, Brasil and also Mexico. Mexico has a lot of dj's and parties and there is also a very nice sounding band called Travellers All Stars. We are always talking to people in Mexico and hope we can do a couple shows there soon.  We did shows in Argentina with Los Aggrotones and they played here in our city too. Jurassic also came to our city like 3 times, also a very good friend called Felix from Reggay 420, Brazil. We have good relationships with reggae bands, fans and dj's around this area and abroad too. Just as we are now sharing thoughts in this interview with you, Czech friends.

Do you know any Czech bands? In the year 2012 were in the Brasil on tour our rocksteady band Larika and before them, The Spankers and Fast Food Orchestra which are ska bands. Have you ever heard about them?

We don't know much yet but we would like to meet bands and hear their sound. I like the name Larika, in portugues I think it means something like when you smoke and you get the munchies. Big up Reggay 420!

This few questions will be little bit about vinyl because in several last years is back and still alive. So... do you prefer CD like a format for music or vinyl because is more authentic and not so sterile? And what do you like on vinyls, for what is better to publish on vinyl than on CD? Have you all your releases on vinyl only?

Vinyl is the best format. We hope to release our first single this year, we are working on it as we speak. Until now we only released our first album digital for download on the web, and the Horror Reggae in limited CD copies but we would like to have it all on vinyl.
