Rozhovor - The Steakouts

Konečně po 3/4 roce co jsem na netu rozjel tenhle zin, se mi podařilo udělat rozhovor se zahraniční kapelou. The Steakouts je poměrně mladá kapela z USA. Daly se dohromady v roce 2009 v Buffalu. Nedá se o nich mluvit jako o nějaký přední U.S. kapele ale spíš jako o kapele na lokální úrovni. No vzhledem k tomu jak je velká naše republika tak by u nás byli lokální úplně všechny kapely. Rozhovor je v češtině ale vzhledem k okolnostem jsem ponechal i anglický originál.
 


Ahoj, pro začátek mohi byste se přestavit, popsat váš sound a jak dlouho už hrajete?

Ahoj
Jmenujem se The Steakouts. Jsme hodně ovlivněni ska a punkem jako třeba Less Than Jake a Reel Big Fish. Také nás hodně ovlivňují 2tone kapely jako Toasters a The Specials. Začali jsme hrát před 2 roky.
 
Máte už nějaký hudební zkušenosti z jiných kapel?

Všichni z kapely už hráli dřív v různých punkových nebo ska kapelách či jazzových souborech na vejšce.
 
O čem jsou vaše texty?

Naše texty jsou většinou sranda a legrace, i když někdy jsou trochu vážnější. Můžem ti je poslat jestli chceš.
 
Co byste řekli o současné americké scéně, jak byste jí charakterizovali? Vím že v USA je velmi populární hlavně skapunk ale jsou tu i early reggae kapely jako Aggrolites, Green Room Rockers, Soulsteppers nebo The Bullets. Jaký mají úspěch u publika?

Většina ska v USA je spíš underground s velmi propletenou scénou a je tu spousta hostujících kapel. Jasně máme tu hromadu skapunkových kapel ale kapely jako Aggrolites jsou taky celkem populární u amerických fans. Kapely jako ty co jsi zmínil jsou stále na vzestupu ale zdá se, že skapunkové kapely jsou od sebe čím dál tím víc "vzdálený".
 
Je hodně velký rozdíl mezi kapelama ze západního a východního pobřeží a tamní scénou?

Jasně jsou to dvě rozdílné scény. Východní pobřeží je víc punkový a převládá tu taková tvrdší muzika. I když je to takový dvoubarevný, zase jsou tu kapely jako The Slackers, což je 2tone a potom Less Than Jake a Streetlightmanifesto a to jsou zase ty ostřejší kapely. Západní pobřeží je takový odlehčený, legrační a lehký a dělaj tam obvykle rychlejší hudbu. Jako příklad: Reel Big Fish nebo Aquabats.
 
Víte něco o České republice?

Známe od vás hodně dobrých hokejistů. Aleš Kotalík hraje v našem městě v Buffalo Sabres v NHL. Potom Dominik Hašek, byl výborný golman a také Jaromír Jágr je velmi populární v USA. Rádi bychom si někdy zahrály v České republice.
 

A znáte nějaký ska nebo skapunk kapely ze střední a východní Evropy nebo přímo z České republiky?

Slyšely jsme Fast Food Orchestra ale nejsme si jistí jestli ještě hrajou. Jinak máme rádi Bazooka Service z Polska. Neustále hledáme další kapely k poslechu.  

Jo jo Fast food stále hrajou ale dost změnily styl, i když je to "ska" a trochu ragga.
 
Vychází v USA hodně ska fanzinů, čtete některý?

Ne v našem okolí. Většinou čteme fora a zjišťujem co se kde děje.
 
Ska bylo v Americe na svym vrcholu v 90. letech, pomatujete tuhle dobu, kdy Ameriku zaplavila černobílá ska horečka, jaký to tenkrát bylo?
 
Byly jsme ještě velmi mladí během těch dob. Znaly jsem hromadu muziky a milovaly jí, chybí nám ty dny ale v USA nás čeká ještě hodně fanoušků :-D
 
Máte rádi tradiční ska / early reggae jako Desmond Dekker, Skatalites, Laurel Aitken, Derrick Morgan, Mr. Symarip nebo Pioneers nebo preferujete radši třetí vlnu ska?

Milujeme všechno ska, i když náš sound by se dal zařadit spíš mezi třetí vlnu. Jasně, jsme ovlivněni starším ska a podobně i novým soundem.
 
Hráli jste už někde v zahraničí?

Ještě ne, ale brzy by jsme snad měly hrát v Kanadě, i když to není zas tak daleko. Náš sen je jednou jet hrát po Evropě a vidět všechny ty krásný místa.
 
Teď trochu jiná otázka. Co si myslíte o vaší vládě a různejch válkách co vedou USA aby měli další zroje ropy a nazívaj to válkou proti terorismu? Přitom je to hovadina, jen záminka.

Je to pravda je to hovadina. Hodně američanů je extrémně nasraných na vládu a všechny ty války co odstartovala. Bushova administrativa udělala Americe ve světě špatnou reputaci a to není fér vůči většině obyčejných lidí v USA. Terorismus byl jen pojem a vyhlášení války proti pojmu je úplný nesmysl.
 

Nemyslíte, že vlajka USA vlaje víc než je zdrávo?

Mezinárodně jsou USA hrozně zaneprázdněný a podílejí se na věcech do kterých jím vůbec nic není. To je pouze můj názor, nejsme politik. Musel bys se zeptat někoho informovanějšího v otázce americký politiky.

At the beginning, could you introuduce our band and describe your sound? How long you play?

Hello! We are "The Steakouts". We are influenced by ska and punk bands like Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish. We also are influenced by two tone bands like the Toasters and the specials. We have been a band for 2 years.
 
Do you have some music experience from other bands?

All of our members were in previous punk or ska bands, or jazz ensembles at college.
 
What are your lyrics?

Our lyrics are fun and goofy, though can be serious and expressive. I can send you a list of our lyrics if you would like.
 
What do you say about actual american ska scene? How would you characterize it? I know that in USA there is quite popular mainly skapunk but there are many good early reggae bands as Aggrolites, Green Room Rockers, Soulsteppers or The Bullets. Has they success with the fans?

Most of the ska in the USA is underground, with a very tight knit scene and lots of young touring bands. Yes there are many ska/punk bands, though bands like the Aggrolites are also well liked by American fans. Bands like that are on the rise and it would appear the ska/punk bands are becoming fewer and far between.
 
Is it a very large difference between the ska bands from west coast and east coast and theirs scene?

Yes the scenes are very different in USA. East coast is more punk and heavier music, or it can be very two tone like. Bands like the slackers are the two tone like bands and Less than jake and streetlighmanifesto are the heavier side. The West coast is very goofy and light, and usually faster music. Bands like Reel Big Fish and the Aquabats.
 
What do you know about Czech republic?

Many good hockey players come from there. Ales Kotalik plays for our city's hockey team the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL. Dominik Hasek was a great goalie for our hockey team as well in the 1990's. Jaromir Jagr is also a very popular player in the USA. We wish to perform in the Czech Republic one day
 
And do you know any ska or skapunk bands from central and east Europe or directly from Czech?

We have heard of Fast Food Orchestra but are not sure if they are still active. We like Bazooka Service from Poland. We are always looking for more bands to listen to though.

Yes, Fast Food are still active but they changed stile, but it's "ska" and little bit ragga.
 
Are publishing in USA lot of fanzines about ska? Do you read some of them?

Not in our area, though we read forums to see what is going on with ska.
 
Ska in USA was most popular in 1990's. Do you remember this era, when there was black and white ska fever? What was it?

We were very young during this time, though we knew much of the music and loved it all. We miss those days, but there are still big ska fans in the USA.
 
Do you like traditional ska / early reggae as Desmond Dekker, Skatalites, Laurel Aitken, Derrick Morgan, Mr. Symarip or Pioneers. Or you rather prefer third wave of ska?

We love all ska, though would classify our own music more similarly to third wave ska. We are influenced by early ska and have new music similar to it coming out soon.
 
Have you played anywhere abroad?

Not yet, we are likely to play in Canada soon, though that is not very far in distance. We dream of coming to Europe one day to perform and see all of the beautiful places. 


So, now little bit different question. What do you think about your government and wars which USA lead due to sources of oil. It's terrible that your government calls this wars, like "Wars against terrorism" !
It's a bullshit, just pretext.

You are right, it is bullshit. Many Americans are extremely not happy with our government and the wars that they have started. The Bush administration has given the USA a bad reputation that is not fair to the majority of American people. Terrorism is an idea, not a unified state, and declaring war against an idea is nonsense.
 
Do you think that, a flag of USA flutters more than is need?
 
Internationally, the USA is too busy and gets too involved in things that it need not get involved in. That is only my opinion, I am not a politician and would be the not the most informed person to ask about American policy.
